Punishments
If convicts broke the prison rules, they were punished by having their legs put in chains, being locked in a dark cell all by themselves for days at a time (solitary confinement) or by being flogged by whips such as a cat o’ nine tails.
If convicts had been very bad they could be flogged up to 100 times in one day.
Rewards
Good convicts were rewarded by getting to leave prison early and work outside the prison until they finished their sentence. This was called a ticket-of-leave. If they behaved themselves on their ticket-of-leave, they got “pardoned” which means they were free.
